They live a lot longer in captivity (given good care, of course), as tortoises are on the menu of some indigenous carnivores (rats, badgers, magpies, foxes, wildboar and many other animals), particularily the smaller torts. In the wild, 30 is a ripe old age. Oldest captive Hermann's I'm aware of is reported to have lived to be 131.
My first, who was my grandfather's long-time pet (31 years) until he passed, and, later, mine (her last 19 years), was at least 60 (she was an adult when Grandfather found her) and quite possibly as old as 75, according to a vet friend.
