Hi everyone, I’m brand new here and hungry for knowledge. I’ve adopted a tortoise this weekend but I’m struggling to identify and sex it. The previous owners took her to a vet who said she was a girl, hence the name Lottie, but couldn’t identify the species. Would really appreciate any help and advice. I’m located in the north of England, Yorkshire and she/he is currently living outside in our garden. I believe she may be about 50. Thank you in advance for any help or advice

Looks like an Ibera Greek tortoise, Testudo graeca ibera. Take some photos of the plastron (bottom shell) including the tail area so that we can help sex it.

She should do OK outside when temps are above 50 F, hibernating outside isn't a good idea since it can often lead to fatalities, even if they've done it before. There are threads on hibernation (brumation) once the time comes in the fall. There are also several UK members that can help advise.

You'll want to make sure the garden is escape proof.
