If you are careful, you can pare that down. It almost looks like it is overgrown and not an actual underbite. A good vet can help with that, or, if he is eating, putting his food on a terra cotta saucer or a rough tile/paving stone will wear it down. I have a baby box turtle that had a huge over bite and really overgrown toe nails. Two weeks on a tile and he was golden.

I am not sure what kind he is but I will guess that he is one you might want to identify and see if a permit is required to keep him. I will also say that if one is required and the adopter doesn't want to get one, or "hide" him, find someone who will. This animal would almost 100% get put down if turned over to the authorities.

He is super cute!

I'm not positive, but looks like maybe some kind of DT to me. We'll see what the experts say. :)

@Saleama thank you, hopefully someone can identify him for me. I will definitely suggest the coarse dish and a vet visit.

Agreed on the DT diagnosis.

It's a desert tortoise (Gopherus morafki), and needs to have its lower beak ground down. This is a combination of not enough calcium, and fed the wrong kind of foods. Tortoises MUST be able to bite off their food. This biting action keeps the beak trimmed.

Thanks Yvonne, I'm too new to have had a clue what had happened. When they brought her in there was a pile of baby spinach that she was attempting to eat. No lights. I was thankful her new family is eager to learn about her care!

...and you do know that too much spinach isn't good, right?

Spinach is one of the good veggies that isn't good in excess because it binds calcium to it and thus excretes it in the urine. But occasionally its ok.
