My little guy is not much of s digger, douse it matter how deep the bedding is, if so how deep should it be. Thanks!
Is it ok if he is not much of a digger?
When kept indoors, substrate does sometimes make a difference to some Russian tortoises. Most of my adults rarely bury themselves in their cypress bark substrate. They prefer to use their dark hides instead. I keep babies on an organic soil/coconut coir mix substrate. Any baby Russians that I've had almost always prefer to at least partially, usually completely, bury themselves. Even when it's under a hide which is usually a clay pot cut in half. The adults substrate is about 4-6" deep. The babies at about 2-2.5" deep.
Sand doesn't make a good substrate. If eaten, it is hard for the tortoise to pass it and and it can become impacted making the tortoise sick.
I think the main reason for not digging in sand is that it collapses back in in on itself. It is very hard to tunnel in sand and that is what Russians do in the wild; they dig tunnels to live in.
If a tortoise has places to hide it might not dig. Neither of my russians ever dig when they are outside, they go into one of the three hides I made for them. When they are inside every once in a while they will completely cover themselves with the substrate, but mostly just sleep on top of it.
