So I've just given Sheldon his bath and was drying him off when I noticed this scute is peeling. Is this normal?! Should I worry?! Have I done something wrong?! (I've added a pic of him from the top too, he had this damage when we got him, it doesn't appear to have gotten worse)
Panicked torty mummy lol

Shedding is normal. But don't peel it. Let it be.

Oh thank god! No I won't peel it I'm just so relieved it's normal and not something I've done wrong! Looking after a tortoise is hard the first time round, there's so much to learn lol
Thank you

The way that plastron scute is coming up is probably due to old shell rot or something like that. Gently lift it a bit and give it a good sniff. Does it smell bad? Squirt some Betadine under the scute. Only do that once. Then daily for a while I would clean out under there with Nolvesan. You can usually buy it at feed stores. After cleaning it out real good, let it dry then pack some athlete foot cream in the crevice. If it is no longer an active shell rot, the above mentioned treatment won't do any harm, but if it is still active, it will do good.

His under shell has been smooth since I got him and I do check him pretty much daily this is the first time today that it's been lifted but I'll definitely do what you say! I'm in England so do you think the products will be available over here? I might check eBay/Amazon in a minute for them

Also do I need to put the ointments on and leave them or wash them off?

Is this the right product? Also is there an alternative to Nolvasan? It's just that for a small bottle it'll be £42

Yes, that's the right thing. The Nolvesan is a rinse that doctors use before surgery. I believe the name is chlorhexidine. It shouldn't cost that much. Here in the states its under $10 for a bottle about 20oz.

Fab will get it ordered! Does it matter what type/make of athletes foot cream I use?
Having googled I think I should be able to get hold of a Nolvasan type solution from a horse shop lol

Hi I sniffed right near the scute last night (you should have seen the look on his face lol) and couldn't smell anything. I presume I'd be expecting an unpleasant smell if it were active shell rot?!

Reminds me of King Kong. The giant beast sniffs the smaller one, striking fear of being eaten.
