back in the day, before all this fancy heating stuff was available,i used a large mayo jar full of water with an aquarium heater in it,Ithought of this when i found a bunch of these heaters in the attic.well the wheels are turning and im thinking a five gallon fish tank with a few heaters in it just might be an excellent night time heater, this is a baby stage thougt, just wondering if anyone has some input on this idea? thanks john

In the book "South American Tortoises" by Vinke and Vetter, they discuss using tropical fish tanks in larger tortoise habitats for heat and humidity, and the occasional fish that jumps out makes a nice snack. The way they discuss this makes it sound like a common practice in Europe.

Many of our folks here keep their humidity-loving torts in their 'fish room' to benefit from the heat and humidity, and I used the 'jar and heater' trick back in the 80's for my first Red-foot.

There are a lot of ways to accomplish this particular goal. Good luck!

Good idea. I was thinking of using a space heater, but this sounds safer. How big of an area do you think a 5 gallon bucket would heat up?
