Soaking won't make the shell softer- the softness is 100% due to a diet that is too low in calcium, vitamin D, or other essential elements. (At least one of your advisers does not seem to really know their stuff.)

Look, let's cut through some of the issues building up. For whatever reason, you got started off on the wrong foot with this tort- it is not important if your original source knew what he was talking about or not, you just need to get back on a good track. The cares and diet you mentioned are all kind of 'iffy', and now your poor little guy is suffering from a few different things.

I would start with temps. Your temps sound low but not too bad, but the real temp at the top of the substrate is often different than what thermometers show when the substrates are wet. I would bet that if you laid your hand on the ground it would feel cool and clammy. Your guy wants a warm habitat and warm ground. Cold tortoises do not eat properly.

The next priority would be its diet. It needs more high-calcium foods, such as collard or turnip greens. The Library, linked below, can help with that and the other issues you are facing. I would try to help stimulate its diet by offering warm soaks and snack-sized chunks of tasty foods, like strawberry, banana, chunks of chicken, and brown mushrooms.

It can take some time and work to get things going well, and trying to overcome misinformation just makes things worse. Unfortunately, things can snowball out of control and really stress the tortoise badly, so we need to get them fixed, and fixed quickly.

Is this tort really 3years old?? Looks a little smaller than my 10month old... unless you have really huge hands!

that is NOT the size a 3 year old healthy redfoot should be.. there are dietary problems here I would look for a local reptile rehabber if you can't find a vet that you think is versed in turtles enough. You may need to have it gavaged if it comes to that. Biggest thing is if you can get it's appetite back you'll need to completely revamp it's diet..
Every tort has different growth rates. The lack of eating is the main problem.

Hi Viking 1989,
Don't worry so much about the lights right now.
My advice is to keep the WHOLE enclosure a constant 81F and daily soakings for 20-30 minutes in 91F bath water.
I expect by Thursday he will be improving just from that.
Then mash some sweet potato with some mazuri and some cactus pad on the side, he won't be able to resist it.
By the way you have a nice looking red foot.

If you live in a cold climate like I do, you can put a little space heater under the enclosure to get the temperatures consistent, adjust it to get that 81F and check it morning and night.

Have u done the baby food soaks? If so do you think they are helping? Bumping the wattage will help, you could also get a ceramic heat enitter thats high wattage. I would switch back to your previous substrate. Sand can impact him, even if he isnt eating now, in the future it could. It also doesnt hold humidity well. Has he opened his eyes or.shown any interest in food at all? Let us know what the herp vet does. I would advise.against any injections since he is so weak, but hopefully someone else will chime in with a second opinion.

I am so sorry for your loss. This has been a tough couple of weeks for some keepers here.
