I love Greek torts:)
Ive never seen an American desert tort in the uk though.
The Desert Tortoises in America (Sonoran, Gopher, etc) are protected species and owned by the states in which they originate in the wild. Folks who have them are simply a caretaker, not an owner. It's against the law to remove them from their home state, so anybody who has one and is moving out of state has to turn it over to Game & Fish Dept or give it to someone else residing in the home state.

Why are they protected? Is there a small population in the wild?
