Hello,
So i am possibly adopting a box turtle, My friends daughter school has an Adult box turtle. I think the teacher is tried of taking care of it and gets neglected. So i am probably going to take it in.
I have had a Russian Tortoise for almost 5 years now, so i have some experience with Turtles/Tortoises. I just wanted to make sure i have my info right before i bring it in.
Lights
On for 12 off off for 12
UVB
Heat lamp
Enclosure
I plan to get the biggest i can that i can fit into the area
Temperature of enclosure(inside)
Basking spot: 85-100 degrees
Daytime Enclosure range: 70-100 degrees
Night time: 64-70 degrees( i do have some CHE that i can use to boost up the temp a little, i use them for my Russian during the Midwest winter in the basement.)
Substrate
I plan using mostly orchard bark for the enclosure size .
Since its a female box turtle, plan to have a section where it could lay her eggs, that area i plan using eco earth and Sphangom Moss
Hides
depends on size of enclosure but minimum of 2
Water Dish
I plain to change the water daily, so ill find some kind dish that wont be to hard to carry and clean out each day
Diet
From what i have been reading here is the diet i have mostly seen
60% protein, 20% veggies, 10% leafy greens, 10% fruit.
Protein options: butterworms, sowbugs, calci worms, livebearing fish, wax worms, crickets, silkworms, earthworms, night crawlers, beetles, silkworms, and more rarely shrimp, boiled chicken, or boiled egg
Veggie options: carrots, okra, winter squash, sweet potatoes, summer squash
Leafy greens: dandelion greens, red or green leaf lettuce , turnip greens, romaine lettuce, mustard greens
Fruit: berries, melons, grapes, apricots, kiwi, mango, apple, banana
Soaks
2-3 times a week
other questions
The box turtle and Russian will be in separate enclosures but will it cause them to act different since they will be right next to each other?
in terms of Supplements how often do i use calcium and Multi vitamin powder for them? once or twice a week?
Any info will be much appreciated
