Hi all,
My almost-two year old Greek tortoise Olive unfortunately got into a scuffle with one of our dogs who got into his outdoor enclosure.
We took Olive to the animal hospital in Boston, where he was treated for 3 puncture wounds on his carapace, one with cracking, at the rear, and damage to his plastron with a sliver that had to be removed and a cracked piece that was stabilized.
Olive came home with us, and is in drydock. He's moving around, has eaten, and drank water. We are to administer an anti-inflammatory pain med - 5mg Meloxicam daily (injection, subcutaneously at armpit?) and antibiotics 100mg CefTAZidime every 72 hours (injection, alternating front legs into muscle group?). Olive is supposed to have his bandage changed weekly. We are also putting pain-reducing Neosporin on his punctures.
Can anyone give tips for giving needle injections to tortoises and other tips for best healing? What is the best drydock set up? He did have a piece of aloe with his clover/dandelion/vitamin sprinkles to hopefully soften up his stool.
