I saw this on FB and it got my wheels spinning. If someone were handy enough I think this would make a fabulous out door feature hide for larger torts. Just have to be sure to have it properly ventilated I suppose.

Back on http://tortoiseforum.org/thread-60804.html I talked about many success of one person.

He would line up several freezer/refrigerators down a slight slope with the top or bottom removed, so that there would be a 15 to 20 foot tunnel)3 to five units end to end). The one at the top would terminate the 'tunnel'. Then a good amount of soil would be pushed up against their sides, and with all the doors facing up, he could find the occupants quite easy. With this 'tunnel' of refrigerators/freezers the temp inside would be very stable, and many temperate tortoises hibernated well. They could move up or down the slope to thermoregulate. The all white inside is good too, it cuts down on how many other things might want to go in there, black widow spiders being high on that list.

How do you cut a refrigerator?? This seems cool, and I see free, non-working fridges on CL all the time. The cutting off the bottom of the fridge part is daunting though...

Actually it isn't too bad to cut the bottom out of most makes. The walls are thin with a sandwich of insulation between them. A Sawzall would do it pretty quickly. Just be sure to wear gloves and eye protection. A mask wouldn't be a bad idea either with the insulation.
