What are the conditions in his enclosure? Does he have a cuttlefish bone to chew?

I would say normal good size to roam both brand new bulbs uvb and temp. I feed him daily water him actually take him out for walks in a larger area 3 times a week. But he gets angsty either way. Besides the point i do not have him a bone to chew.

Hi and welcome the black you see is pigment in the new growth perfectly normal. Your aiming for a smooth slow grown strong shell not bumpy or with pyramids. This is achieved with good environment heat, light, substrate, diet, hydration etc..
It is good to add a cuttlebone ( found in pet shops for avary birds) they will ignore for month but suddenly you see it has been pecked at.
Check out forums at the top and search for care sheets to help you.
