I have four sliders, about a yr and a half old, to small to sex. I got them from different sources hoping to have a breeding pair down the road. All four of them have begun nail fluttering each other though.

Do both male and female sliders flutter their nails, or just males?

I’ve read that although it’s MOSTLY males that do it, sometimes females will. It can apparently also be associated with dominance aggression and establishing the hierarchy, so you might want to watch for nipping and biting.

I do watch them closely. They all seem to get along fine now. They have a lot of space and they're going into a 300 gallon stock tank soon

I'm leaving right now to head out to the Repticon Atlanta Reptile show. I have an extra 55 gallon I'm not using and chances are they may have another turtle roommate by the end of the day

Both sexes can and will do this regularly. I see this as practicing mating ritual just as dogs and cats play to practice hunting behaviors. As part of the serious mating behavior, male sliders bite onto and hold the back of the female's neck. Females do not do this.

I see aggressive / dominance / territorial behavior with slider with nipping at the rear feet and tails of other turtles, driving them away. Again, normally only males.

Three of them attempt to mount the others and flutter already, I'm assuming they are male. My largest is 5" much bigger than the others. I've never seen the large one attempt to mount, so I've assumed it might be female. However it just recently started fluttering like the others. They are only a little over a year old.

This is very interesting, and I am completely ignorant about turtles but in my neighborhood with have ponds filled with them so I find your discussion very interesting. Could someone tell me what that “fluttering” is?

These 4 are just regular red ear sliders I think. None of them have the red ears though

Yeah, I was noticing they don’t have red ears, which is why I asked. I wonder if they’re some other kind of Slider? I always thought the red ears were pretty dominant, and it seems odd for all 3 to not have red ears.
@Markw84 any thoughts on the type of sliders these are?

I've wondered about this too. Interestingly enough, I got them all as hatchings from different places, and they were all sold as red ear sliders. I think they might be Cumberland sliders possibly? Here's some more pics.
