I'm thinking about getting my brother an aquatic turtle that will stay under 4 inches, or around that length. I will be undertaking the primary care o the turtle. What species would be recommended?

Anything in the mud or musk turtle family will stay fairly small, most of them around 4 inches or so. Females will be a little bit bigger in both cases.

Commercially available are the muds and musk like said above, also the chinese reeves turtle is also a small and cute species.

I have both muds and Reeves. They are about the same personality wise, except the muds are a bit more bitey. I love my little Reeves, he is a total ham. Either would really be a good pet.
