I have a hermann tortoise, ''crush''
Known to me as a boy, but I did always suspect he was a female!
Shocker!! Crush is a female!

Now the hard bit,
:/ Im finding it really hard to relate to him as a she, as you can probibly tell, I know its not right to him to be called a him when he is a female

(confused yet?)

But I just cant adapt to doing it...anybody else have this problem? I always wanted a boy, but love crush just as much as I would any other!

Hard enought doing the male female thing... so lets not get started on his name... I do call him crushie mushie alot of the time so ''crushie'' is more girly than crush but I dont think I could totally change his name..

Had him 1yr and 1 mnth so you can c why it is hard lol

I can totally relate. Maggie's new kitten was a male named Max. After a vet visit, she found out that Max is Maxine. But every time we talk about the cat I refer to it as him. So hard to change my way of thinking about that cat's gender.

There's nothing wrong with Crush staying "Crush." Its a uni-sex name!

After discovreing Alfie is a girl i have had similar problems. Have had her for three months ish. The trouble is that my toddler know 'her' as alfie and doesn't really understand gender differences in tortoises. If i change her name it's going to cause a little confusion. And i still call her him all the time :)

Thanks for the belly laugh, dmmj! And thanks for your self-restraint...

Kymiie, we all thought Taco was a "he" and called her "he" for four years before I had my epiphany and sought out a definitive identification from Danny.

Now I am glad she's my Princess Taco Bean. All of our cats are male anyway, so Taco's "she-ness" helps to balance out the fold! Just for a relatively lame comparison, I have three daughters and two sons, and after the first two babies I just prayed for "healthy and whole" and didn't worry about the gender!:D

I totally agree with this topic! We have mixed opinions on if our little guy is really a boy, or if he is a girl. It will be a couple years yet until we will know more definitively. No idea how we would handle it if he is a girl...likely we will still think of him as a he and not change the name. It is tough to go years (or even weeks or months) thinking one thing and then change that thinking. Best wishes.

I had a female ball python for 20 years named monty (after monty python) I named her before I found out she was a female and i don't think it caused her any gender isuues. :)
