In KY. My Sulcata is 16-18 months old.
I have done EVERYTHING that I'm supposed to do with this little stinker but I don't feel like it is growing. Looks and acts very healthy just not getting bigger. How big should a Sulcata be at this age?
Well, yes you cant really put your tort outdoors just yet. You dont have the climate for that. What do you have your tort in now? What were your long term goals for your tort as far as housing goes? Were you going to build a heated shed outdoors? In a basement?
There are many factors that determine growth rate. At that age, I'd say 4" to 10" is what I would consider a normal range. If your tortoise was started dry as a hatchling, or not fed enough, or not fed correctly, or kept too cool, or kept outside all day, not soaked enough, not offered a humid hide, etc., it might not be as big as it could be. Does any of this sound familiar? I have five that were hatched in May 2012 and they are all around 7-9". I moved them outside at the start of summer, and as expected their growth slowed tremendously. I find this to be a temporary adjustment period and then growth tends to come back with a vengeance.
I like to keep humidity up as long as I can. If they are being housed indoors, this should be fairly easy. If they make it to 6-8" smooth, they will usually not start to pyramid after that. MY problem comes when they are too big to live inside anymore and I have to move them outside in my dry climate. I try to keep their warm sleeping quarters humid, and that seems to help, but their grow lines certain reflect the dryness here.
