In addition to all of the above, you also need an infrared temp gun. Temps and their management are very important for any reptile.

What is that?
I have a couple thermometers and a hygrometer on my list...would the infrared temp gun replace that? or be in addition to?

What I am looking to do is set up the habitat and get the temperature regulating in place before I even adopt my tort.

Its a point-and-shoot temperature reading. You can get by without one, but they're pretty handy to have.

I had one a few years ago, but I found that the distance you hold it from the target changes the reading. So I quit using it. I wasn't sure I was getting a true reading.

I have a cheap therm on the basking side and I have a $30 therm/hygrometer that has sensors that you can suction or tape an inch above the substrate and it's pretty accurate (I keep that one on the cooler end).
