Sorry I live in Pennsylvania and I have one Russian tortoise. It is a female. I keep her inside in the winter and outside in the summer. You can call me Doug.

It may be that he is burrowing into the substrate? Not sure.

I really would like to watch him/her grow and mature. Please help me? I saw on a website that I could get one that is 2 inches long for $200. Does anyone think I'm making a mistake?

Hello. I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly but I have not heard back from anyone!?

Most tortoises are used to living alone. They are very unpredictable about how they will behave with another tortoise. They can potentially be wonderful by themselves, but harass another tortoise. A size difference can make this worse. So be very careful about getting a second tortoise that is much smaller than the first one.

You will have to quarantine any new tort (keep separate for 3-6 months) to protect your original tortoise. Also, if they don't live well together, if one tortoise (likely the smaller one) is being harassed, you will have to maintain two separate enclosures. Might not be necessary, but be prepared.

That said, most of us end up with more than one tortoise or turtle!

We would need more information about your tortoise enclosure. They live outside? Part of the year? Where is your female tort now? What are the temps? Lighting?

Is she digging with her back feet only in various locations? that might be testing sites for egg laying.
Or is she digging down head first? In that case she may be trying to dig to get warm, or feel secure.

I've merged a couple of them into one thread, and when I find the others, I'll merge them here too. Please just continue to watch this one thread and don't start any new ones. If we can't answer you here on this thread, we won't be able to answer if you start a new thread either.

So here's a hint for you: Go to our "sold " section and make a note of the names of our members who have sold baby Russian tortoises in the past, then contact them to see if they have any babies for sale at this time.
