Recently i got a call from my landlord telling us they wanted to redo our backyard area and add a patio which is fine more then enough room but from what they said it will take a little bit with the yard being ripped up all over but now i've run into the problem of my redfoots outdoor enclosure having to be moved for the time being my parent's live about 10 min's away from me and have no plan's/use for they're back yard i was thinking about taking my enclosure there but first i was wondering if anyone sees a problem with taking my redfoot on a 10-15 min trip 3-4 times a week to get outdoors for a couple hours i would just leave him with my parent's for now but they haven't a clue of how to care for him and have no desire to learn and i'm just not comfortable with that any thoughts?

p.s sorry for poor punctuation writing was alway's my worst subject.

It would be quite stressful I would think. Can you leave them at your parents and you go there every day to check water and food. Also, is there a reason they/he can't stay outside in an enclosure at your parents?

Is the enclosure secure enough so that he can't get out? If so you could take in there and just check on him daily or so. Otherwise I really don't see any problem with taking them there a few times a week.

night's are to cold for him to be out my parent's have no experience with anything reptile related and don't really care to learn and have a couple big dogs that i'm not comfortable with leaving him around even if the enclosure is "dog proofed" my plan was to take him over 3-4 times a week till the yard was done for like 2-3 hours each time outside

yeah the enclosure is secure the only problem is i don't feel comfortable leaving him there they could careless about reptiles/tortoises and there dog is kinda really untrained that's why even tho i "dog proofed" the enclosure i dont want him out there without me there to

Then I would just take him over there a few times a week. My Tortoise doesn't seem stressed with a 10 minute car ride so I would think they would be okay. Even if you just went twice a week that would be good. I can you make a temporary enclosure at your own house for a little bit? Even if you had to be out there with them to supervise like if it was in the front yard. Maybe a kiddie pool or one of those portable dog pens? How big is your Tortoise, is it a baby or an adult? It's not worth having the Tortoise somewhere where you don't feel that it is safe especially if there's a dog around that wants to eat it :-(.

it's a baby he's almost 4 inchs and i was going to use a kiddie pool in the front yard but the more i talk to the landlord the more it seems like there is going to be constant traffic through the front yard to the side gate that leads to the back my front yard is also on a street with a sidewalk right in front so i'd be worried about someone coming by grabbing him, do you think its possible after a few times of going there he would come to understand that the ride is taking him outside? or is there anything i can do to help minimize the stress during the ride? i was thinking about giving him some food to chow on on the way to keep his attention

Tortoises don't like change, they value consistency, I fear the multiple trips per week, just won't be good for him long term, will it kill him? no, just stress him out unduly. My 2 cents.

Do you know any of your neighbors well enough to put something in their yard for a little while? I have given my Tortoise a couple dandelions to eat on the way to the vets office. I would be afraid somebody would steal him also from the front yard.

You mentioned "dogs" more than a couple of times regarding your parents home. I just would not trust my torts in that situation. Where there is a will, there is a way! The dogs will find a way to get the torts. Like dmmj said, my 2 cents.

Or, you can just set them up indoors at your house for the duration of construction. I would NOT allow construction workers to know I had tortoises.

he'd only be out there when i was there supervising and no dogs would be present i'd make sure of that

The screens scatter UVB, making it next to useless.

Window screens that I've encountered only block ~30% of UVB.

This is just my opinion and what I would probably do in your shoes...

I'd make the occasional trip to Mom and Dads with the tort. Supervise him the whole visit (cuz of the dogs)and have a temporary enclosure set up there so he gets the same space every time.

Keep in mind, if your tort has had regular access to UV, then he doesn't need to make this trip daily.. Maybe once or twice a week. It's only temporary afterall...
Is it perfect? No... But you could choose no outside time at all during this process and that's not perfect either. I'm about to move out of state (to your city actually) and my torts will be going through a transition process, too....

thats actually a good idea i think i do that. i would just choose no outside while its going on but it's going to take at least a month for them to finish so i think that's the best way thanks for the idea, and advance welcome to medford your torts will love it its nice sunny warm and humid right now, Youll be the only other dedicated tortoise person in my area to my knowledge we did just get a reptile rescue going here but i'm not sure how they are with torts
