So i've had my tortoise for about 2 years now (a russian tortoise, 8 yrs old), and it's about hibernation time now. i'm not sure what's happening, the temp. in the house is around 70 F (and higher around the heater he hangs around), his metabolism hasn't slowed down, he's not eating and wakes up randomly and wanders around in the daytime. what would i do? should i hibernate him or not? Any suggestions would be helpful

I don't have any Russians, but I do have Desert Tortoises and have chosen for the past three years not to hibernate them. I keep them in the house with a heat emitter and a heat blanket on. If it's warm enough in the daytime I put them out for a while. Here in California it's been wonderful so no problem putting them outside during the day and bringing them in at night. If I can provide them heat than there really is no reason to hibernate them to me. Right now your temps are really too high to hibernate anyway. Yvonne told me once that for my tortoises the temps would have to be between 40 and 50 degrees to hiberate them. Good luck.
