My tortoise started making a hissing noise and opening its mouth and I do not know what’s happening. I noticed that the mouth is not pink like the other tortoises and as it was, it’s more pale. I am trying to soak it more frequently and I increased the temperature in the enclosure (separate from the others) but I don’t know what else I can do as there is no vet for reptiles close to us. Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Does he do this when eating or when he is just resting?

Is the opening of the mouth like a yawn or gasping for air?

Does he pull his head in when he hisses?

Is there any sounds when he is breathing?

What is your humidity?

Daily soaks in luke warm water can help clearing the nostrils. It is of course important to keep them hydrated.

For the temperatures, an ambient temperature of 85F is recommended day and night while your tortoise is having respiratory symptoms.

No she does it at random times and when eating, it’s roughly every 15-20 minutes
Yes the mouth is open but when eating she does it with a mouth full
Both, sometimes her head comes out and once he stops she pulls it back in, or it’s in and makes the noise
No other sounds besides this

Thanks a lot for your recommendations, she is eating but not as much as before. I was thinking maybe the other guys in the enclosure were giving her a rough time and because she is a slow eater didn’t eat enough (random thoughts). I will keep an eye on her and will see

Is there a weight or size difference between her and the others?

Is there any discharge from the nose or are the eyes watery?

You didn't answer my humidity question but I suggest keeping it up.

Yes, do keep an eye on her and update us!

Yes she is bigger than the others
No discharge at the moment
They live outside and the humidity is currently around 48%

I guess I missed how many torts is the one in question with? Sex? How are they kept? To me what you are describing is a respiratory infection...if so, he needs to be separated from the others, placed in a small hospital tank and treated for URTI.
