Hi Everybody,

I am hoping you can help identify this guy for me. My dad found him this morning on his morning walk about to cross a busy street. I am pretty sure it is a water turtle but not quite sure if it is a red ear slider or not.
Does it look to be one from the wild or someone's pet?
I want to make sure I tell him the correct way to deal with putting him back or finding the owners.
Oh and he is in Grand Prairie, TX, it's a suburb of DFW.

I am not good at the picture thing so I hope these load for you.

It's probably a native Texas turtle. I will guess river cooter (Pseudemys concinna)

Pops has confirmed that it has red ears. Should I have him take it to the nearest pond or creek? Where he found it there aren't any rivers, creeks or ponds. I was thinking maybe some kid found it, brought it home and then left it outside to fend for itself.

if you do not want to keep as a pet then i suggest trying to give it to someone that has the proper setup for him.

It has been taken to the closest creek/pond area which is where we think it was picked up from.
