I really like mineralls sticky tongue outdoor supplement... I have been told that super veggie was great also. So I was wondering what all of you preferred to use on your tortoises and why...

I use any powdered calcium supplement about twice a week, except for adult males, who get nothing. I use any reptile vitamin about once a week. I like MinerAll too, and I've got the Repashy vitamins right now. I also leave cuttle bone in every enclosure for them to nibble on at will.

You can save a ton of money by understanding a simple thing- most vertebrate animals have similar vitamin and mineral needs. What our tortoises need are very similar to what we humans need. It may also interest you to know that when tested, many big name pet supplement companies were found to have lied about what was in the stuff- usually over-reporting levels of calcium and vitamins.

You should also know that no study suggests supplements for humans or pets daily. Supplements should SUPPLEMENT a good diet- they do not fix a bad one. Ideally, the human or tortoise diet should be varied and balanced enough to not need them.

But, you can buy cheap multivitamins on-line (I like these- http://www.puritan.com/multivitamins-067/vita-min-multivitamin-complete-formula-1-000320), then crush them and sprinkle part of one on your tort's food every few days or weekly.

I made up a mix my torts seemed to like- https://sites.google.com/site/tortoiselibrary/nutrition/nutrients

Tom, why don't you give your adult males calcium powder? I put grated cuttlebone on my adult male russian tort's food a few times a week, should I not do this? I also keep a cuttlebone in his enclosure (which he's never touched).

Calcium leaches out of the soil. Here in the Pacific Northwest, east of the cascades, we get lots of rain. I sprinkle limestone flour on the outdoor grazing areas for all my tortoises every 30 days. What doesn't get eaten, gets absorbed by the plants that are eaten. And, it improves the soil to boot. Cheap and organic, 98,3% pure calcium. I buy 25 lb bags for a song at our local farm store.

Are there any supplements that you would recommend tortoise owners not wasting money on
