Also save one of those desert tort pens for me. I have a neighbor with a desert tort who really needs a new home and she's very distrustful of rescues. Thinks he is better where he is, but his life is not... good. Its a good life for a cat, not a tortoise, but that's pretty much how she keeps him. I was thinking one day she might turn him over to me, but i"m coming more and more to the conclusion that my yard can't really be made good for a tortoise. I'm slowly chipping away at her, but I suspect one day she just will "need" to find a new home for him
Right On, we are here to help if and when you need.
We met a lady last year with a 10 yr old Desert Tort in a 40 gallon aquarium, and refused to say or admit it needed more. Some people need a lot more chipping away at. Keep it up.

I loved the snow tour of the desert. I love warm weather, and I love snow. Yeah, I know.

Well sounds like we may be getting our first "batch" of Desert Tortoises soon. A very good friend of ours met a gentleman whose wife works for the Desert Tortoise Preserve in California City, CA. They have a lot of DT's that people give them that CAN NOT be released into the preserve, Domestic. People hear of this "Preserve" and drop off their unwanted ones ... This is where Y's Tortoise Sanctuary will shine, providing "Homeless" torts a loving home.
Will keep everyone updated, pens will be starting as fast as we can get the 2x8's.

Yeah, you'll be full up in no time. That's how the numbers game works with rescue, especially of long lived species that 1/100 of the people take in can actually care for

I want to say the name has NOT changed it still is "Y's Tortoise Sanctuary" we are just including the 'Desert' to help others understand it's different than Joshua Tree Reptile Haven. We are also fighting a battle against 'Them' to make this a reality. We have another Fish and Game investigation based on the complaint "They are illegally housing Desert Tortoises" We have 17 right now with 17 permits, nothing illegal happening just jealousy. We are getting 4 more in just the next 5 days, a clear sign we are doing what needs to be done. The 4 owners are very aware of the Organization that is commonly the 'Go To' for DT's, but want nothing to do with them for different reasons, mainly there lack of caring and ignorance. Example: 1 of the owners contacted said org and were told they "Needed to take pictures of the male so when they drop it off they know what a male looks like." Forward March ......

I'm totally honored and humbled to have my name associated with the sanctuary! and when you stood that 4x4 up to show the name scratched on it it made me laugh. Good job! Go get 'em!!

When I was still in the rescue business I didn't apply for desert tortoise permits because I planned to adopt out any desert tortoises I took in. And I gave thenew keeper a permit application. Since you've named it a 'sanctuary,' does that mean you plan on them staying there for the rest of their lives?

When Fish and Game showed up the first time we tried to explain we were only permitting when re homed ..... He was not okay with that at all. Demanded we permit every single one within 5 days of receiving one. When the new complaint was made I asked him why can't we have 17 Permitted Desert Tortoises? Why are we different than anyone else? He responded "I don't know" and then told us a story of someone he knew that had a whole bunch of DT's. So we don't think we're covered no matter what we do, we'll always have to worry about them.
The Sanctuary .... Yes, for now all will have Forever Homes here, at least the first 200 ish. Then we will have to have a Re Homing Process due to we wouldn't have space. We hope that Y's Tortoise Sanctuary has a big following by that point and people will be proud to have a Tort from Y's. We hope that there will be people wanting to have a Y's Tortoise in their yard and provide a Forever Home. This is something that will be bigger than anything else we know of or have heard of in CA. Sounds crazy but I've been called worse.

Far as you know, is there a clause in the DFW's regs that limits the number of permitted tortoises? I didn't think that was addressed in there

No limit to the number of Torts on paper, just Wardens opinions to have to deal with. There is literally only a few sentences of Regulations on paper, but the Wardens opinions and "In my experience" type mentalities are what we struggle with. We are looking forward to the person for Fish and Game that's in charge of all DT's to pay us a visit. We want Fish and Game on our side and in our corner, to do this we must overwhelm them. Then they will have to say to themselves "In my experience" after seeing what we do. Y's Tortoise Sanctuary will be 'THE' model others look at to see how and what to do.
