Hi

Any fellow Hermanns owners in the UK?

Looking to maybe start a breeding programme once mine is old enough (looking like a male at the moment)

Be good to breed some UK babies who are healthy and good for those looking to get into torts in the UK!

Well better than those pet shop imports!

I would check there's a market for them first.
There is a sanctuary near me which is full to bursting with all sorts of torts that need rehoming yet they are still breeding them too.
Doesn't make sense to me to bring more into the world if there are so many that have been given up and beed new homes.

I completely agree with Lynn.

Have you checked the Tortoise Protection group website. They have hundreds of tortoises up for adoption, for free. Some just a few months old right up to some that are 80+years old. I would say the most common tortoise on there is Russians and Hermann’s but there are leopard’s, sulcata’s, you name it.

Definitely I will have a check!! I thought they were becoming more popular in fact one place had sold out of Hermanns when I got Tim!!

They do sell but when people realise the commitment and expense in looking after them properly or the kids lose interest they give them up, or as was probably the case with my tort, dump them in fields! Sadly some breeders aren't bothered about the torts care or what will happen to them in the long run, for them it's all about the money.

Shocking really isn’t it? After all they aren’t that hard to look after - just need some specifics!!

I think part of it is that there is SO much false info out there!

For example I was told that I had to buy a heater with my tort as he couldn’t drop below 30 Celsius at night!! (Totally false of course he does fine at room temp)

I was also told soil and sand mix and even beech chips for substrate!!

It’s so hard for new owners!!

The temps would depend on the species of tort of course, and the caresheets are your best guide for that.
Part of the problem is that people don't research before they buy, so stores can and will happily sell unsuitable, unnecessary, and even unsafe equipment just for the profit.
I had no idea about torts when I brought mine home. He wasn't supposed to stay with me - I was supposed to be a half-way house but circumstances changed and thankfully I found this forum.
4 years later he is still with me and I would be devastated if anything happened to him.
