So I got a new baby... which is a Sudanese sulcata. supposedly he’s 8-12 weeks old which there is no way... I’m sure he’s younger. But today I noticed that he’s getting these yellow dots around his neck... I’ve only had him for 2 days. So I know that it’s nothing from my care, I got another baby before this one and he’s healthy and everything. What do I do!? I’m gonna be making a vet appointment first thing tomorrow. But until then, is it going to spread to my other baby. I don’t know what to do. I’m freaking out! He only had 1 now he has about 3 or 4 within a matter of couple hours! ?89FF7357-3CC7-43ED-9489-17826118AAE6.png36C27238-47D8-42F0-8B6E-15DA20C290E4.jpeg

An expert will come along soon to help. This might be highly contagious, if you can put one in another room for now. Search yellow bumps on sulcata @Tom

You should separate the two tortoises right away. Then practice "sterile technique" as much as possible when tending to the tortoises. Take care of the healthy one first, then thoroughly wash your hands and all things which touched that tortoise's enclosure. Then take care of the sick one and repeat the sterile business. Don't touch the "well tortoise" again till the next day, and only touch the sick one again if absolutely necessary.

Repeat this process each day.

THE OTHER THING YOU NEED TO DO IMMEDIATELY IS TO NOTIFY THE SELLER OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE HE/SHE SELLS BABIES TO ANYONE ELSE!

Who is the seller? We may need to notify him/her to stop all sales ASAP.

Did you get both of your tortoises from the same breeder or source? Are they both Sudanese sulcatas or not?

Please look at he "yellow pot" threads in our health section. This is a highly contagious, fatal disease.

go to the pet store or online , get some maracyn 2 (minocycline) when you soak him use it at double the strength meant for an aquarium , your gonna need to be somewhat capable of math weights and measures ........ dissolve it good , and let it dry on him ........ keep him dry and warm , keep the substrate dry , keep him at optimal temps , don't let him get too cold ever , nor keep him too hot ....tough to dose anything this way , i doubt you can overdose him .... minocycline is a good guess , if you take him to the vet , tell the vet some anonymous guy on the web told you fortaz will most likely not work , baytril may , but a better chance of cephalothin , ampicillin , minocycline , or something along those lines working ...... jmo

cephalothin is a cephalosporin like ceftazidime , ceftazidime was has been tried by the U.F. , it didn't work , cephalothin has worked at least in vitro ........

we used inj fortaz here on the ones we had the they cleared up and have not come back but the 2 never grew after that. still alive and eating fine just dont gain weight at 11 months old. this is why we are still waiting for them to get back with the reults of the testing. according to the lab nothing oral is going to do much for this as least the sample they have he said it must be systemic injectable.

Making sure I've got this straight...

Baby #1 is a regular sulcata that you've had for a month.
You haven't seen any spots at all on this one?
Where did baby #1 come from?

Baby #2 was purchased as a Sudanese sulcata that you've had for two days.
This is the one you're seeing spots on.
Where did baby #2 come from?

Have they ever been housed together?

remember baby #1 may have been exposed to this already and could be carrying it and have exposed baby #2 to it. ive seen this transferred over a month or more later to another baby who had no signs or anything. baby #1 may not be showing signs or anything yet. i believe she said they were in contact with each other.

We are aware of at least one case where an uninfected baby was exposed to an infected baby, and the previously uninfected baby became infected.

we saw it here first hand. over a month later one person had one where the bumps fell off and there were no more they came in to ask us about 5-6 weeks later after getting a second baby 3 days prior and against what we told them put them together. the first one remained clear of bumps but the new one came down with them within 3 days. both have since died.

as mark said you now need to try to dry this one out with the bumps. avoid to much soaking as much as i know you want to. every other day is fine even and get temps up in their and keep substrate drier then you usually do. it will be hard to tell which one was the one with them originally now though because there was now qt done. always do 90 days qt and never have contact at any point even with your hands with out washing extremely well before that. this way you would have known which one was the one carrying this to start with now its just a guess.

For clarification... qt = quarantine.

You have been asked at least twice where you got each of the babies. Please answer.

i believe you may be correct , the animal they treated did die , but they believe he died from a fungal pneumonia ,. he was pretty ill when they got him ......... the central florida zoo used penicillin g benzathine– penicillin g procaine , they're animal was alive with no recurrence 31months later ......
