It's a young Black Rat snake. They take a couple to a few years to loose their hatchling color pattern and become black. Many youngsters are killed because people don't know what they are killing. What species?
I wasn't expecting to see one this early in the season. I haven't disturbed any areas where anything may have settled in for the winter. So nothing I did caused him to be active. I've seen 2 adult male box turtles so far. Wouldn't it be funny if Jerry happened to move to an area with a large snake population.Wow, seems early .....great spot to see him in the leaves!
One of my past neighbors was a "kill on sight" guy when it came to snakes....he was convinced every garter or young black snake "has diamonds" so it must be poisonous!
Nuts! I'm allergic to antivenin .........and even I do not kill snakes out of caution! I never could convince Jerry though. He retired and moved to Fla.....don't imagine he found any down there, do you?
lol....karma.....
What part of SoCal do you live in? I’m near Joshua Tree, haven’t seen any yet this year and I’m hoping it don’t 😳I'm now up to 4 rattlesnakes here. 3 babies and one large adult. Still haven't seen any gophers or kings.
