My question is this... We had our water tested (well) for People Plants and Pets health in mind. We were worried about Arsenic, Uranium and a couple other things that are found in abundance in this areas water. Luckily NO HEAVY METALS.... yessssssssss. Some of our neighbors water is so contaminated it is completely unusable, unless RO filtration is performed. Our water did come back with the following levels.......Magnesium 24.60 mg/l and Calcium 55.17 mg/l
With such a high level of calcium in our water does calcium even need to be supplemented? I am a farmer and am very aware of the problems with high calcium levels in regards to "Nutrient Lockout." Does this behave the same way in Tortoises? Do I need to provide water with less calcium in it? These ?'s come from the "Cuttlebone" that is always said needs to be in torts enclosure's.

Thank you......ummm you say tag I need to learn that. Still learning all this
To tag a member, you put this @ in front of the members forum name. Then a box will pop up listing members that are similar in the lettering Incase you don't have it exactly right. If you have it exactly right, usually only that members name will pop up. Then just click on that name.

It's a keyboard/keypad thing. If you're typing, no matter what device, you can do it. I'm on a Kindle and I'll alert you - @EppsDynasty

Did someone tell you that those values were high?

Yes, Theses levels are considered "Very Hard" water. In plants calcium causes all kinds of issues from uptake of nutrients to binding of them. My high levels of Calcium have little effect on our turtles but not sure about the Torts.

Not having a cell phone the last 10 yrs. has put me terribly behind in the Knowing of the emoji and like/dislike world. I'm getting it just slowly. Personally I do not like Emoji's.... To small, have no idea what the expression is supposed to mean. I'm still in the world of sending a Thank you card not an emoji.
Thank You @Yvonne G ............ Boo Ya I tagged you, your it!

I had to finally relent and get a cell phone. There are just too many sites that ask for your mobile number and I couldn't do business without it. BUT! it sits on the charger gathering dust. I'm paying a monthly fee for a device I don't use, just in case I might need it.

You should use it more. Your missing an untold number of spam, fraud, and useless calls everyday. Don’t you feel like your missing out? As for learning how to communicate on this forum as everyone else is, I will commit. Tortoises will be a big part of our families lives. This is the place I will bounce of ideas and LEARN. This is I believe the only forum that is worthy of my trust. So to you all get ready for some Emojis that don’t make sense and some word ?’s.

I’m Interested to see what others say but i HIGHLY doubt that the calcium in the water is remotely enough for a tortoise.

Certainly not if he is not getting it in his regular diet as well.

This water that is very high in calcium is what every tortoise drinks. My ? is, with all torts getting this calcium rich water everyday does it need to be supplemented? All torts get Mazuri everyday as well as graze/forage, in addition to the water so how much calcium is to much? Mazuri is a "balanced" feed, so if more calcium is needed than it gives, how much? I might not be getting it but this seems like a valid ?. There is such a thing as to much calcium. I just don't know the levels for torts. It will be a ? asked to the vet.

I'd rather go back into your world of no cell phones. Unfortunately, that's the only phone I have, no land line. But I also use my phone for internet too, no computer. Except for forums like this one and shopping, I could do without the Internet too.

I would add calcium on the form of cuttlefish similar to what is provided for a parrot. Leave it in 24 x7 and you will find it gets pecked and eaten. Calcium is so essential for shell, bones, claws and beak and must be in the diet. As they hardly drink water unless being soaked it will not get sufficient from your water.

I have not found that tortoises hardly drink water. I think they will drink a lot of water if it is available to them, especially if they are not soaked as they should be. But I agree that whatever calcium is in your drinking water is not going to be enough for either you or your tortoise if that's the only source of calcium being consumed.
