Hi im thinking about getting an adult Russian tortoise and unfortunately I don’t think i can house it outside especially since it’s going into winter in New Jersey so I was wondering where in my house would be the best place to keep the tortoise

Wherever you can conveniently fit a 4x8 foot enclosure. A warmer area is better if you don't plan to brumate.

Outdoor housing is great when your weather will permit it in the warmer months.

Yeah as Tom says, where ever you can fit the needed enclosure size😊I’d try keeping it away from a window ideally because that can effect your temperatures, but don’t worry if that’s no possible, just have blinds down when sun is out.

If you have read this one already, hopefully you’ll find this indoor housing thread I made useful, it covers correct equipment(lighting, heating, uv), levels, sizing, appropriately maintaining humidity, substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything and a really handy diet link to check out!

If you’ve not seen this one either, it can also really good to familiarise yourself with, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying

Hope they come in handy!🐢💚

I prefer having mine in a room that I visit multiple times a day, just in case. Also, I have him in a room that is heated according to his ambient temperature requirements, but it is not necessary if you have a well insulated closed chamber, The bigger the space you are able to give him the better.

You already have springtails and lots of other bugs in your bedroom.

Springtails and other harmless dertivores will stay in the enclosure where it is warm and humid. The rest of your room isn't a great environment for them.

I didn’t know that thanks

(Just to clarify their won’t be bugs all over my bedroom and they’ll stay in the enclosure right ?)

Correct. I've been keeping reptile enclosures in my bedroom since I was a little kid. I never had bugs all over my bedroom.

I don't think anything will keep springtails out of the enclosure. They will find a way in.
