Time for a new vet. That one does not have any idea about what she is talking about.

1. Your tortoises are too young to sex.
2. Great. No RI signs. Not significant for this scenario.
3. There is no way to assess whether this was or was not the case by examining a tortoise externally and except for the strawberries, the diet sounded fine.

Here is most likely what is going on:

That you are not seeing this in the tortoise you got from Greg is no surprise. Greg starts his babies not only properly, but well.

Please don't spend anymore money on vets. It will not save your tortoise. Give the tortoise the best care you can with daily soaks and good humidity. Some of them make it and some don't. Nothing a vet does will change that. It is a question of how badly damaged the internal organs are from previous dehydration.

Ascott, Yes Charley was quarantine...

Quarantine should last at least a month or two, and sometimes longer. It takes at least this long for some illnesses and diseases to become apparent.

If the tortoise is a month old and you've had since the 1st of May, it could not have been quarantined properly. I just want to make you aware of this to reduce the risks associated with bringing in any other new tortoises in the future.

Based on your vet's responses, I would agree that you need to find a new vet for the future. Ask other tortoise keepers in your area for a better recommendation.

Glad to hear that she is eating. Let her eat as much as she will.

Thanks Tom, I will continue to soak & keep Humidity up. I read the link and it souonds exactly like what Charley is doing. I have never had a hatching before Tucker (Greg T baby) and He has just thrived and grown so well. So when I got Charley I did not know to expect different. I was just trying to give her a good home.

I will make sure I do the qaurantine pierod properly next time ...I did not do that long of a quarantine time. So I am sorry about that :( But the guy I got her from said she had be alone for the month he had her. So I assumed that was long enough quarntine time. And I will begin looking for another vet ...but I found this one under the vet list on here. I guess its back to the drawing board ... :)

Talk to Yvonne about that. It sounds like the vet should be removed from the list.

I have bumped up Charleys Temps (92 overall and 103 basking), Humitdity is a battle but stays between 78-81% with frequent misting, I have been offering her spring mix, dandilion weeds, hibiscus leave & flowers, clover, plantain, & mazuri softened and smashed on the diced mix. She has fresh food and water round the clock. And I have been soaking her 3x/day ...2 with carrot baby food & 1 plain water.

This morning she actually has her eyes open for part of the morning, walking around her enclosure, and She actually seems to like the mazuri and has been eatting the green/weeds with it. still not eatting a lot at a time but 5-6 bites at 3x so far today. But this is a huge improvement from the last few days. :) She has not had a big dification yet. She has a small little one..looked normal though. I am hoping she is going to pull through.

How do I know if I have made it clear of the Hatchling Failure Syndrome? What do I need to be looking for?

If the tortoise shows signs of growth, eats and poops well, and appears to be reasonably active, I'd say you would not have to worry much after that.

It sounds like she has a good chance of pulling through. Keep it up!

Tom, I have a question...I read the article and you said that your Daisy suffered from HFS but survived because she made it long enough for her liver & kidney cells to regrow new cells ..How long does this process take for the new cells to begin to grow?

I know she is not out of the woods yet. but its encouraging to know she showed signs of improvement this morning. Thanks Neal for helping me through this! You have been so helpful .. and definiately more helpful than the vet! So thank you for being there! :) And being nice and not blasting me for the things I did wrong.

Generally speaking, I use the 100 gram mark as an arbitrary milestone for a tortoise that has made it past HFS. Most HFS babies stall at 50-60 grams or earlier in bad cases. If they resume growth and make to 100 grams, usually they will survive and be fine after that.

No way to know how long it will take any given tortoise. There are many factors. A 35,000 gram tortoise is going to have a bigger liver and kidneys than a 35 gram tortoise, so eventually new cells will grow to replace the damaged ones. There is no way to know when this will happen or how long it will take.

Thanks Tom! Gives me a base and expectation for her future growth. I am believing she is going to make it :)
