My friend gave him to me because he was committing himself into a mental institution. And he got him as a gift for making a website for a reptile breeder.
Pretty sure I read somewhere no colder than 60 degrees. And also, At that young age, I wouldn't mess around with less than upper 60s. They're from Ethiopia, I checked the average temps there, it said it's been observed to get down to the 31 degrees °F, but 43 on average in the cold season. But...
I wonder, is the shed really open? They like to feel safe, that's why he's wedging himself between things. (probably an innate equivalent of the walls of a burrow) Try making a smaller area inside the shed out of cinder blocks or wood that he can wedge himself into. I saw another post about a...
Yeah, that's a fun idea. I saw a talk about how 'smart' corn is, evolving to be delicious and useful so that we grow it everywhere. In a sense, it's 'using' us to thrive.
Thanks for this, and everyone's responses.
Seems like the conclusion is: they're smart about finding food.
I read an article about gopher tortoises and it concluded that there was no real social structure among the tortoises besides, 'biggest gets to mate.' The only reason they seemed to...
Hi everyone,
I was reading an article on this forum the other day that said you can equate tortoise intelligence to a white rat! I could tell they weren't dumb, but white rat level is pretty smart. That means they could be trained Pavlov-style?
My tortoise, Dr. Coffee, has started coming...

Timothy Hay is, in fact, an ideal food.
After 4 months of owning an 8" Sulcata in Ohio, the hardest thing after the initial investments of the supplies, (Tort table, lights, thermometers, etc.) is to keep them as warm as you need them to be, you can count on your electric bill being $50-$75 more expensive.
I love having him around...
That's really nice. I'm going to build something like this for Dr. Coffee when it gets warm. I have had Dr, Coffee (8" Sulcata) around cats before and they're just interested, hardly make an effort to hurt him, they quietly observe. That being said, pretty sure I'm still going to put wire over...
:tort: No, I use orchard grass. there aren't any carrots in it. I give him carrots, but I shred them first.
:tort: Like birds, do tortoises produce unfertilized eggs from time to time?
I got Him/her a couple months ago and I was told he was six. I posted pics in this thread http://www.tortoiseforum.org/Thread-Could-My-Tortoise-really-be-almost-7-pics#axzz1IfLW6HOV
The people on that thread guessed that it actually was a male. I could definitely see it being a dried up egg...
Thanks for all the responses.
I think I'm going to keep a close eye on his excrement for the next week or so. If there are any more, I'll go to the vet. If not; he probably just found something weird and ate it.
I do let him walk around a little area of my room, but I make sure...
