    I use 6 inches of damp coco coir and about 1/2 inch of orchid bark on top to keep the enclosure pretty well clean. What are your temps?
    you will need to get a ceramic heat emitter and a thermostat to keep the ambient temp right.
    Have you looked at the care sheet for Russians?

    Hey Drew! Sorry I was busy with work - Alaska is a Herman's not a Russian ;)

    I'm not sure what the substrate is - the pet shop gave me it all with an 'all included' package but it was already in the table he gave me. It is like a gritty thing and is very dry.

    Drew - I believe you may be exposing him to too much UVB. Switch to a 5.0 and see how he does. Make sure you have a hide, so he can get out of the light as well.
