    Spekes hingeback

Hi Aaron, I have a Spekes - she's been with us for about 2 years and she is about 3 years old. She is definitley shy, and LOVES her dark places. She doesn't drink a lot of water so we place her IN her water dish when we feed her in the a.m. She doesn't eat meat at all, but loves all...

    chains?!

Thanks for these sites (great info here)! I've bookmarked them for future reference. I plan to keep on "spreading the word." It's amazing to me how ignorant and cruel people can be. Let's hope things continue to change for the better...[hr] That is just terrible! Thanks for the...

    chains?!

Hi guys, I've been hearing some terrible rumors and I'm wondering if anything is being done? Yesterday, my cousin was telling me about a person she met who owns a few tortoises - pretty large ones - that have apparently grown so large they became a "flight risk"...so the couple who owns...

    Doing Better

Just wanted to let you guys know that Radley is doing better. She still makes a slight wheezing sound when she breathes (which seems worse when she's cold and/or outside of her terrarium) but the antibiotics seem to be doing their job. She is much more animated now than ever before! Thanks...

    sorry, more bad news

My Speke's is very sick. Took her to the exotic pet vet two weeks (again) because she was twitching her head up-and-down and side-to-side, like she was struggling to breathe. She literally rubbed her skin raw on the top and sides of her neck. They took a stool sample and did a throat culture...

    is she crying?

Oh gosh, I can't remember now. If I come across the sites again, I'll let you know. I have been doing a lot of research!

    my speke's needs a companion

Good point. When we're ready for that, I'll get in touch with our local Tortoise Society chapter, and see if they have any Speke's rescues. Thank you!

    is she crying?

Hmmmmm. OK, we'll see what we can do to keep the temperature down. At night we keep things lower for sure, but I can move the day-time lamp over a bit. Is this because they can't sweat? To answer your question, I honestly can't tell you what that site was! Sorry! I had been on the...

    is she crying?

I know it sounds weird. I've been searching all over the internet for answers! She's always done this and two visits to the vet conformed that her eyes were healthy. We keep her terrarium at about 90 -100 degrees, with humidity levels at around 50-60 percent. On drier days we soak her twice...

    hingebacks!!!

Wow, I spent like $200 on my Speke's hingeback. That was before I learned I could adopt. Looks like I got ripped off! :( She's pretty high-manintenance (and yes, a lot of work), but she was worth it, of course. We are very happy with her!

    What hinge-backed torts are these?

I believe these are Speke's as well. Does their shell bump up toward the back? We though we had a Bells Hingeback, but as she grew older and her shell got more defined, we did some online research with our vet and learned she was a Speke's.
