New members from Central texas, my daughter just got her first tortoise, a leopard tortoise she named Tyr, after the Norse god of war.

We have a small zoo lol, three dogs, two bearded dragons, two leopard geckos, and four sugar gliders. This is our first tortoise so we would like some input on it's habitat. I just weighed Tyr for the first time, 28 grams. I welcome information on diet, enclosures to make sure we are taking care of our Tort.

I forgot to add, I will be working on an outdoor enclosure for the tortoise this summer. But for the meantime, we plan on keeping the tortoise inside while it's little because we have predators here like coyotes and hawks

Hi, and welcome!

Your new little leopard tortoise needs to live in a closed environment where you can monitor the humidity and heat. This is where mine live, just to give you an example:

They hatch out during the monsoon season in Africa. The warm, moist air helps them to grow smooth shells.

Also, your lights should hang straight down, not at an angle like that. In my last picture the light above the tortoises is a UVB fluorescent tube, and the roof of the cave to the right is a radiant heat panel.

Thank you for the input thus far. I will have my daughter read the comments and articles posted. The light bar is adjustible and can be turned directly down and we do spray down the habitat 2-3 times a day but if it needs a sealed enclosure we will get to work on that right away. I have several aquariums in multiple sizes that would be suitable.

We picked this habitat because it previously was used by my daughter to keep her hedgehog until it passed away and she really wanted to repurpose it for her tortoise . However, the animals wellbeing is our first priority and she will understand.
