That's great for anyone in TX that needs to re-home.

But it takes a lot more than just lots of land! I see you've just joined TFO...do you know anything about tortoises? You said "any tortoises that are in need of a new home"...do you understand that each and every one needs its own enclosure?

I'm very sorry if you think I sound unwelcoming, but we get first-posters here all the time wanting to "adopt" (in other words free) tortoises, only to sell them to the first buyer that comes along.

How about telling us your experience with torts, what species you have kept, how you have fed and housed them, if you have ever bred any, and if so, how you started the babies?

After you have shown that you are a knowledgeable and up to date keeper...then someone might consider allowing you to adopt their beloved pet.

Yes in this world there is a lot of bad people ! But she is looking for torts that are in bad homes . So she is looking to give them a better home . And if she sells them then they will be in a better home . And at least she is at the TFO where she will get the proper info. Oh and please I have 19 years of raising my torts and I have many . So be nice and try to help her not put her down . So ladies be nice to each other You booth love torts and have a great day ![emoji217]

First, I know that you are a long-time, caring, and knowledgeable keeper. That has never been questioned by me.

I desperately hope that everything I posted is wrong. And I hope that everything you posted is true.

I may have sounded harsh, but I am just not as idealistic as you are. I think she needs to understand why no member here is going to jump on her offer. She is a brand new member, only this one post, and no information given at all.

I believe I have been nice...I'm a nice person! [emoji2]. And I would enjoy being able to help her, even in some small way.

Actually, I think I already have helped her. She knows, and hopefully appreciates, that we are cautious on this forum. And if she is not genuine, she knows not to waste her time here.

Wow. Well first of all I have 3 tortoises. And I say I have plenty of land so that way people know that I am fully capable of making more enclosures for any new ones I may adopt. I have had my tortoises for almost 2 years and they are very well taken care of. And yes I just joined because I never knew about the app. And I have never posted cause I mostly use it for reading purposes. I follow many Facebook groups and maybe will keep to posting in those instead. I would never sell them I was seriously inquiring for myself to give any tortoises that people couldn’t handle anymore a new home. And yes you sound very unwelcoming so you may want to work on your approach for the future

Thank you for responding!

I am glad to hear that you want to adopt for the tortoise's welfare. We are very cautious on this forum because sadly, there are lots of people just looking for a free tort to sell. I'm so glad to hear that you are not one of them!

What kind of tortoises are your 3? I just have one...a CA Desert Tortoise named Chug. Are yours already in TX, or are you transporting them? I'm just curious how far the move is...I've heard traveling with one tortoise can be a challenge...can't imagine doing it with three!

Please stay on the forum. You have probably already noticed that some of our advice doesn't exactly match up with the info on the Facebook sites. If you stick with the info presented here, you won't go wrong.

I have 2 Sulcatas and 1 leopard. I currently live in seguin Texas. Just traveling to Dallas Texas on business for 2 says. That’s why I was reaching out to the area. My tortoises won’t be traveling with me. They will have a caretaker

You like the big ones! Are they large yet?

You said you've had them 2 years...did you go the hatchling route or adopt them older?

One was a hatchling and one I adopted as an older Sulcata. The leopard was in need of a new home and someone reached out to me for that one. She was a few months old already when I picked her up

Hello and welcome.

I didn't understand the above from the first post either. I thought you were in the process of moving to Dallas from somewhere else and were asking for free tortoises before you were even there and set up. With tens of thousands of members all over the world, you can imagine some of the crazy stuff we've seen. Karen, and many others reading (Like me...) don't want to assume the worst, and that is why she asked you for more details. Please don't take offense. The questions are asked solely out of concern for the tortoises. Now that we have a better idea of who you are and what you are all about, we're happy to help. :)

So much of the care info for these two species circulating out in the world is just plain wrong. I've heard horrible things about those FB tortoise groups, the info shared there, and the people (person?) running them. I just like to mention this so that when people read the care advice here, and it directly conflicts with what they might have read elsewhere, they have an understanding of why.

Anyhow... Welcome again to the group and let your questions or conversation fly!

Hello and welcome!
I think that if you had made this post after you were an established member, Karen would not have sounded as concerned. We all feel the same and we’re glad that the veterans of this group always come forward for the purposes of the torts best interests.
The information on the tort FB groups is always conflicting and often times, wrong. I’m in a few other groups and get helpful information on human health topics but never for torts...especially sulcatas! They often post videos and pix of sulcatas eating food on the “no” list and there’s encouragement to do so.
People chime in with their own experiences and call it “truth” and that’s why the conflict. There’s also lots of bullying and nasty people commenting; none of which are there to help members and beginners do the right things. It becomes an all about ego and putting people down rather than teaching them and being kind to one another.
So, we’re glad you’re here because this forum is the opposite! There are so many caring and knowledgeable people here and that all WANT to help you and your torts.
So you see why there’s a need to prove your knowledge and worth, in order to actively rescue torts here. It’s an important part of the process and keeping harmony within the TFO.

Keep posting so people hear from you and get to know you!

You’ll also get to know the people here and learn to trust the advice given by experienced keepers.

Welcome again and we look forward to reading your posts!
