Aspen and hemp are too dry. Topsoil is no good because you can't know what composted yard waste it is made of, and its very messy, as you've already seen.Thank you for your reply. I previously had him on Aspen bedding, and then Hemp bedding. I also tried topsoil but I just found it got so messy. Can I ask for your suggestion on what substrate to use?

Coco coir works best for babies, and once they reach about 3-4 inches, I switch them to fine grade orchid bark. Both of these can be kept damp which will give your tortoise some much needed moderate humidity.
I buy mine in bulk from local garden centers. A huge 2.0 cu. ft. bag costs less than a small bag from the pet store.Hi Tom,
I too have a Hermann that currently has herbifloor substrate. I do mist it every few days, but am interested in the fine grade orchid bark you suggest. Is one brand better than another?
