Sulcata Biting His Leg and Bleeding

Hi all,

Yesterday, I was checking my enclosure cameras and caught my sulcata biting his own leg for a few minutes. Upon getting home, I checked on him and noticed he ended up scratching his own nose on his arm spikes and there was dried blood on his face.

The leg biting is definitely strange behavior, and many posts I found online make it sound like it’s usually harmless. I’m a longtime reptile keeper and to me personally, it looks like he is irritated with something that is possibly itching or hurting him.

My husband and I checked him out and we THINK we saw a mite on him. I’m not sure though - I checked for a long time and couldn’t see it again, and it might have been a springtail too… I will check him again tonight and update this post if I see anything new!

1. Has anyone encountered this before?
2. What should I use for his nose - saline, betadine, etc.? (I washed it off with just water for now)
3. Should I use mite treatment just in case - or wait until I’m sure of whats causing it?

All other behaviors are normal, eating, pooping, he’s active and alert.

What about a long soak to kill.the possible mites? It might need to be deep enough to submerge all skin/soft tissue...basically deprive the mites of oxygen.

That's exactly what I thought too, and keep the water warm. Certainly won't do any harm.
What conditions do you keep him in?

Definitely going to give him a soak and see if anything changes. So far, he hasn't been chewing on his leg anymore.

Outdoor temps have been around 60 - 80F. His shed is heated. Average humidity outside is around 70%. He has coco coir, sand, wood chips and grass in his yard. Maybe an ant or mosquito bit him… it’s hard to control what we have outside.

Hi all, just an update for anyone reading this in the future:

Gimli stopped biting himself after 1 day. I searched for a long time, and could not find mites, ants, or anything else on him. I gave him a long soak to make sure he was clean. The scratch on his nose healed up. So basically, nothing else happened.

For any future incidents. You can use an over the counter antibiotic cream on curs, scraps, etc in case you are worried about infection. Always keep the area clean of dirt and bugs, specially flies.

Thank you. I've heard that you can use standard Neosporin (without pain relief) on reptiles.
My vet said you can also use betadine, though I don't have any at the moment.

But Betadine is really harsh and shouldn't be used for more than a single application. The over-the-counter stuff doesn't kill the cells around the opening.
