Hello, my family is wanting to get a baby tortoise this Spring, our first one and I want to get it right. I'm in the Dallas area too and curious about region specific advice. He'd most likely be in a backyard enclosure. Are there any good resources for what's best around here? Which species thrives the best, what specific stuff enclosures need, what food grows the best, etc. Thank you so much!

Hello turtwig. Well depends on the size of backyard and also the space you have indoors for winter time. A smaller species is about the best route to go. Hermanns, Russians, Greek, or even a redfoot is a great starter tortoise. They are all packed with personality and are quite easy to mAintain. Are

Hello! I'm looking far and wide for the elusive Chaco Tortoise. My husband is an avid tortoise owner and had a female Chaco in 1980-2000. He's been unable to find another and we've been looking for several years now. I've seen a few posts in which you mention them. Do you have any leads on Chaco ownership in this day and age?!

Chacos are very difficult to find. Most of the keepers that have them rarely sell any offspring or adults. Occasionally you will see one on the classifieds. PM me and I can put you in touch with a breeder for an offspring.

    Hey tortadise,

I've been cruising this site for a while, and my wife and I are still in search of an Egyptian. I know they are hard to come by, and I am having a hard time finding folks that breed them. I'm hoping you can help point me in the right direction in finding a breeder.

    Thank you. Happy 4th!

Bob's been in the ground for a month now. Does he still smell? I sure would like to get the cinder blocks off his grave....Yvonne knows about North Carolina, somebody told her. Oh well...at least she didn't YELL at me...

He shouldn't. I'd say the worms and beetles have decomposed quite well by now.
Hi. I live in the UK. My redfoots are indoors in a viv. What do you recommend for substrate? I have had them on grass pellets but I am being told that is wrong? Also, do you know what the humidity should be? Any advice is greatly received. Thanks Donna
    tortadise
    tortadise
Hi Donna. The best substrate for Redfoots is soil mixed with some mulch.

Yes it is safe to buy from him. But overseas transactions would be best discussed with him. As far as being safe, yes indeed.
I have a combined uva and uvb bulb for my tortoise table. Should i turn it off at night and just have it on in the day?
    tortadise
    tortadise
Yes. Leave it on during the day. Cycle of 12-13 hours on and 11-12 hours off. What kind of bulb is it? A mercury vapor?
