  • I have each of my Russians in their own 3x6' wooden enclosures for the winter, inside my sunporch. Their substrate is coco fiber and organic soil. Every day I pick out their messes, scooping the wet ones when necessary. How often do I need to completely empty the enclosures and refill? Also, can I use a mild bleach water solution after it is empty to sanitize? Or is their a better cleaner?

whoops. thank you. i am still very new.
Looking to adopt a female Russian Tortoise. My Ivan & Charlotte are walked outside every afternoon, when it is 60 degrees and above. Currently housed, separately, in sun porch, temperature controlled. Looking for a second female, or 2, for one larger, indoor enclosure, 8x24 ft in the winter, yard sized the rest of the year. Yard sized...literally with human supervision.
Thank you for your time. Message me.

Will you keep the two female Russians together if you find a pair to adopt? I’m looking for advice on this. I’ve heard don’t do it and also that it’s ok. I’ve heard they sleep together in burrows in nature. Not sure what to do if I get a sister for my current female Russian.
Question, I have a zoo med uvb/heat lamp 125w mercury bulb, (hung 12" above my Russian tortoise's shell, in a deep fixture). How much ground is that covering with uvb in his encosure? Anywhere the light casts a shadow? Just the area below in the basking area? I use uvb testing cards to make sure the bulbs are putting out uvb, but I'm not sure how far it's reach is.

Might want to invest in a UVB meter. Many variables to your question. Manufacturer, frosted or not, height, receptacle etc. The highest concentration will be directly under the bulb and taper off fairly much as you get away from directly underneath…but only a UVB can give you the info you want as different manufactured bulbs and age come into play.
