I live in a rural-ish area. We do have two hawks in the area and I hear the two of them all the time. My acre yard has a six foot chain link fence around it so I am not really worried about other predators... just the hawks.
Hello everyone! It's been quite some time since I've actually posted in the forums [sorry about that]!
I had a few questions concerning the outdoor 8' x 8' enclosure I just built for my sulcata. She [or at least I think it's a girl] is about 6 and a half inches long and weighs in at a little...
I was wrong on my measurements, he is right at 4 inches long (not sure why I got confused and thought he was 6 inches). I'm not even sure he is a year old. I purchased him from a woman that bought him from a pet store. She said they told her he was hatched August 2011. He seems a bit small to me...
Thank you everyone for all of the helpful suggestions! We already had plans of bringing him in at night, due to how small he is, so hopefully that alone will prevent predators from getting him. The galvanized wire is a good suggestion over chicken wire. I have always been worried about the...
Hello,
I am in the process of building an outdoor enclosure for my yearling Sulcata tortoise and had a few questions concerning predators. I live in Florida, and we know of at least one Eastern Indigo Snakes that like to hang out in our backyard, and several garden snakes. My tortoise weighs...
I'm in Florida so this stuff grows really well here. I'm getting some of the plant from my aunt, and recently picked up some prickly pear cactus from a friend of mine to transplant!!
We thought also that he had some slight pyramiding when we got him [the lady mentioned that the 'bumps' were what she liked about them], but he is smooth from a side and top view so I'm honestly not sure if he's pyramiding or not. We have him in a better environment now than what she had him in...
I took my baby sulcata outside for the first time today and he/she loved it!!! I still haven't came up with a name for my little tort yet, but when I do, I'll be sure to let you guys know!! Also, does he look good/healthy? I've only had him since Wednesday...
Can you feed a tortoise (mine is a sulcata) the aloe plant? I know people sometimes will eat it. Would it be similar to feeding him the flat cactus (can't think of the name)?
He is a Sulcata. Do you think maybe I'm not soaking him long enough? I don't soak him for very long. 5 min Max. How long does it take for things to happen when you soak them? And how warm is your water?
Hello,
I just got a 1 year old baby tortoise Wednesday, and even though he has been eating and going pee, I have yet to see any droppings in his enclosure. How often do they poop? Should I soak him in warm water for longer periods of time to help him go? Or should I wait it out for a few more...

The lady that had him before us said they got him when he was very small and mentioned he hit the year mark in August 2012.
Haha yeah it might be the winner. We're going to give it a while though. Trying to find a gender neutral name. =]
I'm really new to the thread, and to owning a tortoise, but I've always heard that it's better for them to scavenge for their food. So scattering it about the cage is a good thing.
I ended up finding Sphagnum moss at Lowe's next to the orchids. Our Lowe's lists it as Sphagnum moss, but I am glad the orchid section was mentioned, otherwise I would have never found it!
I plan on taking the HUGE block of sphagnum peat moss back to Lowe's when the weather isn't so rainy...
Has anyone purchased the Sphagnum peet moss from Lowes and put it in their tortoise enclosures? I purchased some yesterday and it is a very fine powder. I'm afraid to put it in my yearlings hide hole. Do you think it will be okay, or should I purchase the moss from a pet store? Its so much...
