We have been working on an extensive and comprehensive aldabra tortoise hatchling care sheet for several months and are in the final stages. We would like to ask the forum community for any opinions and input on what would be of importance to be included. We have many years of experience and unbelievable hours of talking with customers and other keepers, however we think it would be good to hear any other opinions and thoughts before we finalize our care sheet. It is several pages with colored photos that covers every aspect of keeping an aldabra hatchling up to about one year of age. Thank you to all that participate and please feel free to post any ideas, thoughts, etc. If anyone would prefer to share any established care sheets or information directly to us, please feel free to e-mail.

Be sure to stress that if you don't live in a humid climate, be sure to keep the babies in a humid environment.

Be sure to add space requirements for adults . So many people just don't have the room to keep such large tortoises . Feed cost and housing cost will also help greatly to deter someone from buying such a large animal .

Hi Greg:

When I got my two hatchlings I wasn't aware of the "soak 'em 'til they drip" concept, and I kept mine more on the dry side. They are now pyramided.

Also, because they grew so fast, and mine lived mostly on the grass and weeds in their enclosure, they became calcium deficient. So it needs to be stressed that calcium supplementation is necessary plus a GOOD UVB light if they're being raised indoors.

I'm looking forward to your book.

I am looking forward to this. Sure it will be the definitive " go to " info on raising a young one :)

Great idea on the care sheet! I'm glad to see the many years of dedicated tort keepers working together to pass along their knowledge. :) Sorry I don't have any Aldabra-specific tips to contribute, but I'd love to read their care sheet anyway because I'm a total tortoise nerd. :p
