Hey I am late to this party, but I am one of the people who recommend DE...I have used it in my house, bird cages, and outside in my Sulcata enclosure, in Oregon with black ants...It worked for me, except, it's messy in the house and kinda hurt my vacuum but it worked so good outside, now, I did spend some time and energy monitoring the parimeter and kept on it for a couple of weeks...

I will try something moisture-based next. My anxiety is a ten at this point. I just want them gone.
I would highly recommend using Orthene. It is a powder. Sprinkle some on the entrance to a hill or on a mound and the ants will be dead inside of 24 hours (at least they will here in GA). I have used it extensively on fire ants here for years. Even saw one of my tortoises eating some of the powder one time with no ill effects.

I do recommend putting a pail or tub over the area where you sprinkle the powder and weighting it down with a cinder block or bricks to prevent tortoises from contacting it. Once the ants die, just water it into the ground and/or turn the soil over.

I do worry about a powder, since it could spread easier. I'm glad yours was okay, but that is concerning.

Well, you only need to use about a tablespoon on each hill. Then if you cover the application site with a tub or a pail turned upside down as I mentioned in the earlier post, it should not spread anywhere. Mine didn't.

Maybe you could just try it on a hill or two first and see what happens. I can vouch for the fact that it doesn't kill tortoises, even if they purposely eat it (which you can readily prevent).

Update!

The Amdro granules worked the best. They didn't care about the DE, they didn't seem to notice the stake method, and I genuinely can't tell if they took interest in the boric acid/sugar mixture. But this seems to have worked! I think I might have to do a second round, but things seem to finally be improving.

However, I think my teenager found a boric acid/sugar cotton ball today and ate it. Someone moved the bricks covering all the spots we were treating, and I think she found one. Don't ask me why she would put a cotton ball in her mouth. But should I worry?? The total mixture only contained 1 TBS boric acid, poured over 6 different spots. Just checking, just in case.

I would probably check the packaging of the boric acid to see what it says about how poisonous it is when eaten.

I think I would be more concerned about the cotton ball passing safely through the GI tract than harm from that small amount of boric acid.

Did you try any Orthene? If you do, a second round shouldn't be needed.

No, I don't know what Orthene is
