I wanted to use the soil we used last year for our garden (pesticide and fertilizer free) for Hermy's outside enclosure. The problem is i saw ants in the soil (they were eating a piece of wood). We removed the soil with all the antz and the piece of wood. Can I use the rest of the soil that is left over (there is still a couple of ants in it but most of the are gone) for the enclosure or should I forget about it? I would guess they should leave because the piece of wood is gone?

In your area there are no ants that are a threat to torts, just an irratant to you and the houehold. The soil should ok. The was probably a food source for the ants.

Thanks Larry
I will plant some spearmint outside the enclosure and will put some oath too just in case but if they really want to go inside the enclosure, I am sure they will find a way .

Not sure how big the enclosure is, or how much dirt you have, but you can sterilize the dirt by baking it in the oven. A couple of hours at 150 degrees should do it.

Thanks for the idea :D the enclosure is not too big, it is 5x5 but there is a lot of soil so I think it would take too much time to put it in the oven. What I will do is maybe pouring some boiling water on the soil.

That sounds like a good idea as well.
