Hi...I'm trying to make Dover's enclosure more interesting - for him. This little hatchling seems board. I'm getting plants ready...I had a bunch ready for my 1st hatchling but threw them out due to the mystery infection. Anyway- I was looking at fairy garden stuff and thought maybe I could put in some things for him. Like the miniature garden gnome, etc. Anybody see a problem with that? Other than it's too cutesy?

Thanks! Jami

Gnomes are awesome, but I don't think for a tortoise. Russians are acrobats and like to climb a lot. I like visual barriers for them to walk around, thinking there's possibly more on the other side. I also like to grow plants that I can just feed to them. That's all the input I can give.

Here's some great plant identification websites I use.

Thanks. I've seen a few of those sites and they're great! But I need to get things in for him now. He's a hermanns and so far hasn't been climbing too much. I figured I could move the gnome around...my problem with plants is that I don't really have any that would be considered safe as in not newly purchased and have been fertilized, etc. He's just a little 2.5 inch guy and I don't want too many extra chemicals. Thanks for responding and putting up the links!

I don't think it is a ginormous risk, but there is a risk of the tort getting a scratch from knocking it over and climbing them. I think it does sound like an adorable idea. I think it depends on the fairy/gnome

Thanks. I know- I was worried about that too. I'll just have to look around. It'd be a miniature one...I'm going to look into cat grass (oat grass) that torts don't eat, and plant it into the substrate in a pot so the chemicals don't get in his stuff too much.

I know some people just buy plants and plant them. I'm just not sure I want to take the chance...

Thanks

How about some fake plants. As much as you will enjoy the gnome, a tort couldn't really care less. Maybe a flat rock, apiece of drift wood, the fake plants, things he may run into in the wild.

I have a plastic giraffe in one enclosure, the torts like to knock it down and then stand on it like they are proud of themselves for conquering that beast..... Anyways, I see no prob with the cute stuff for the enclosure, it's your enclosure have fun decorating it any way you wish. :)

Yes, I thought fake plants too until my safe ones grow enough. He won't try to eat them? He has rocks and I rearrange them each morning when I stir up his substrate. He's very curious with colors so I thought some little figurine might make him wonder a bit. He wore a path around the enclosure the first few days and now he doesn't seem to walk his perimeter anymore...

I have a combination of fake and real plants, the torts only had interest in the fake ones at first but now they ignore them.
