I think all the animal lovers (besides me) are on the east side. I belong to a couple of saltwater reef forums and everyone on there seems to be on the east side as well.

:0) I like to have someone near.

For all the Phoenix people... are you keeping your sully's indoors or out doors? Do any of you have babies? I am trying to determine if I should build an enclosed pen outside or a indoor tort table first. I would like to be able to take advantage of our sunshine. What is everyone else doing?

Is there such a thing as too hot for a desert tortoise? Do you have a heater for the winter?

I do have a heater for the winter, a ceramic bulb and an electric "pig blanket"
I don't know what would be considered too hot so far as temps, but he has nice places to hide.

Do you have pics of his outdoor area that you could share?

I have plants in the area that I am considering but I don't know what they are. Is there a website that anyone knows of that I.D.'s plants? I would hate to have to pull them if they are safe.

Just found out one of them is Lantana... extremely toxic. The other is Yellow Bells... I was told this one is fine?? I'll have to wait for the other to bloom to find out what it is.

hmm, the link I have bookmarked on "edible landscaping" is gone.
http://www.turtlecafe.com/ediblelandscaping.html

The site is still up, maybe that page will come back.

Here is another one:

it has free run of the backyard. I do have to raise all of my garden higher to keep him out of the there. He'll be in it as soon as (s)he grows some more. The house is only temporary while it's still smaller. There is an additional grass area, and more patio.

I forgot.... how is the Bougainvillea?? I do have some of those on the other side of the yard, and as we all know, the flowers end up all over the backyard.

With the proper precautions (such as water, misting, shade, mud holes, and burrows if needed) they should be able to stay out in any temperature. You would just want to keep an eye on their behavior on the hottest days to look for signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration, and also to make sure they are used to it and not exposed to much hotter than they are accustomed to. You can probably do a search here to find more information about keeping torts outside in the hot desert. Some turn their sprinklers on at certain times of the day for the tort and they will come out and "play" sometimes.

you'll find the tort will change it's habits as the days get hotter and then cool off.
this time of the year he's out grazing 7 AM before i leave for work and then out again in the evening.
he hides for the heat of the day.

I live near Wickenburg and my live in and outdoors; When it is nice he is outside but when real hot he stays in with his lamp on; He comes in at night because we have cats and coyotes and owls all kind of things; Morris is 8 pounds and has a nice big kennel area inside. He also has a big mesquite tree and a misting system.
