I was soaking Mervin and Mabel and noticed these swirls all over their shells. I was wondering if anyone knew what this is and if it's harmful? They're both healthy tortoises, very active, strong appetite and roam quite a bit. I haven't seen changes in behavior either.

No. Not worms. Totally normal part of the shell. They are easier to see in smaller tortoises and while soaking.

I don't know what they are, but we've had a few threads over the years talking about these squiggly lines. Lots of guessing, but no facts.

Thanks Tom, if there's anyone I can count on for information it's you! For a while I was worried, but I'm glad to know that this is normal. I appreciate your response!
