Has anyone tried using an automatic dog door for their torts? Thinking about it. Let your tort in but no other critters!

An interesting idea...how does it know which beastie to let in, and which to keep out?

Well , normally it is a special dog collar. A little black box attached, when the dog stands in front of the door it opens automatically then shuts when inside, they have them at pet smart . Going to check out the door sizes, then maybe figure a way to attach the box safely to the tort?.

I'm sure there's a way, or maybe the company that designs this could make a custom fit. Something more flat , like a dog tag. I'm going to research it!

I've read about folks epoxy-ing a metal name plate to their tortoise's shell, anterior of the carapace, for identification...perhaps this might be an option.

I have wondered about this before too, my concern would be, what if the tort decided to burrow down near the door, would it still close or just stay open letting other things in?

I had thought about it. I have a few years before I need to look into something like that, so I never looked into it. Lets us know what you find out. Then I don't have to do the leg work:D

I like to have some control over this. I open the door in the morning and I like knowing that it will stay open all day. Then at night I go around and open the lids, count the tortoises, make sure the heat is working and fold up and latch their doors shut. Then I can rest easy at night knowing they are all locked up in their warm quarters and they can't get out into the cold night and nothing can get in to get them. I wouldn't want an automatic door that could fail to open not let the tortoise out on a hot day, or fail to close on a cold night. Time and experience has taught me not to risk the lives of my tortoises on electronic doo dads.

Tom, My coworker has one for the dog, works wonders apparently and locks it at night himself.
