Seriously though, we must remember that these are wild animals and nowhere near domestication. Everything wants to eat small turtles in the wild so it is in their best interest to stay hidden as much as possible. Baby box turtles are seldom seen in the wild. Instinct tells them what to do. And instinct says not to hang around above ground waiting for some predator to swop down and eat them. As they get bigger and more comfortable in their captive surroundings, most of them get less fearful, more secure, and their personality starts to show a little more.
It's also the time of years with the weather cooling and days shortening, when they start preparing to hibernate.
Lol. Noo, mine do the same thing! They have been coming out a lot more though recently. But, like Tom said with this weather sometimes you wouldn't even know I had box turtles!
