Basking and what's best

Hello was just wondering what was best for my Trevor (horsefield) when he's basking, do I need a slate rock or something underneath or shall I just leave him basking under his light on just sand and soil mixed ?

I usually put a rock hear the basking spot. Enough so it does get warm, but also leaving a spot so he can bask without being on the rock. The rock does help the tortoise to get warm from the bottom as well as the top. I would try to at least give the option. That's just my opinion. Mine don't really use the rock, but it's there if they want.

I give my kiddos the option too but my big kids just bury their tiles
