Neither. Torts do just fine alone... including other torts!

This is because has different care needs for food and envornment and because torts are basically loners

Good answer.

A tortoise (and nearly any reptile in general) should be spending most of its time in an controlled, enclosed space where it cannot be interacted with other pets, especially dogs and cats.

There's plenty of threads about "when good dogs suddenly turn on their tortoise buddies." Just not a good mix.

If you want to mix a bunch of animals together, get a tank full of fish.

We have 3 very gentle 5 yr old rescued mutts, but they are all inside except to do their business or when I am in the greenhouse. Also an indoor cat and African grey parrot, 3 spoiled rabbits, tame koi and some wild birds who will light on my husband's chair outside. So a lot of animals but all are sweet.

We have 3 fenced acres but one spot I thought would be great for a tortoise is a large totally enclosed with brick fenced courtyard where we could make him a cave, we already have a large dog house in there that has electricity that our big yellow lab rarely used because she preferred inside.

But u guys seem to have a smartass attitude so I'll look elsewhere for advice.

Sorry you feel that way, Judy. Your subject line didn't really tell us what the thread is about, then your question was very limited on what you were asking, so we had to guess.

What everyone told you was what actually happens with tortoises and dogs. We were not being smart asses. Just trying to clue you in and save you a big heart ache when your dog chews up your tortoise.

That being said, you asked, "Male or female..which makes the best pet to get along with other animals?"

Since this is a tortoise forum, we must assume you are asking what the temperament is between male and female tortoises. It really depends upon the species of tortoise, but GENERALLY speaking, females are more docile than males. As to getting along with other animals, tortoises don't interact with other animals. The only time a tortoise might interact with your dog would be to try to chase the dog out of the tortoise's territory. Tortoises are solitary animals and prefer to live alone in their territory.
